Odzala-Kokoua National Park (Congo - Brazzaville)

Weather…

Odzala-Kokoua National Park is one of Africa's oldest protected areas, established in 1935. Spanning approximately 13,500 square kilometers in the northwestern Republic of the Congo, it lies at the heart of the world's second-largest rainforest block. The park is world-renowned for hosting some of the highest densities of western lowland gorillas and forest elephants on the continent. A defining feature of the landscape is the 'bais', natural forest clearings with mineral-rich water sources that attract vast numbers of wildlife. These clearings offer rare opportunities for wildlife viewing within the otherwise impenetrable jungle. Since 1977, the area has been recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, highlighting its importance for global climate regulation and conservation. Currently managed through a partnership with African Parks, the site remains a frontline in the fight against poaching and illegal logging.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
This significant national park is almost exclusively reached via arranged charter flights from Brazzaville to the private airstrips of the luxury lodges. Traveling overland is theoretically possible but extremely tedious, exhausting, and demands perfectly equipped, rugged expedition vehicles.
📅
Best season
For carefree gorilla treks and safaris, the short (January to February) and long dry seasons (June to September) are most optimal. During the intense rainy months, the dense forest tracks become extremely slippery, and many of the fascinating forest clearings are completely submerged.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The protected area has a diverse mosaic of impenetrable rainforest, open savanna strips, and saline forest clearings. Paths off the main tracks are mostly overgrown with dense foliage and frequently cross directly through muddy streams or shallow, waterlogged swamp areas on foot.
🎒
What to bring
Mandatory gear for forest excursions includes knee-high gaiters or rubber boots, gardening gloves for holding onto thorny vines, and breathable rain gear. Photographers must use strict dust- and waterproof bags for their equipment, as the harsh climate can quickly damage sensitive tech.
🅿️
Parking
Private vehicles are highly unusual in this extremely exclusive area. Visitors are picked up directly at the remote airstrip by the lodges' specially modified safari vehicles, which means you do not have to worry at all about parking spaces or the security of your own personal car.
⚠️
Safety
Tracking lowland gorillas follows extremely strict health and behavioral rules to protect the vulnerable primates from human diseases. Wearing surgical masks is often completely mandatory during contact. Furthermore, safaris may only ever take place with highly trained guides and trackers.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical high-end safari experience in Odzala usually spans four to seven full days, as visitor packages are specifically designed to experience the park's distinct ecosystems. Each day generally provides specific, guided activities such as gorilla tracking, river boating, or hiking in the bais.
