Malpelo Island (Colombia)

Weather…

Malpelo Island is a remote volcanic rock situated in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, approximately 500 kilometers west of the Colombian mainland. While the terrestrial area of the island covers only 0.35 square kilometers, the surrounding marine sanctuary encompasses over 27,000 square kilometers of protected waters. Malpelo is the highest peak of a vast underwater ridge, reaching an elevation of 376 meters at Cerro de la Mona. In 1995, it was designated as a Flora and Fauna Sanctuary by the Colombian government, and in 2006, it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The waters surrounding the island are world-renowned for their exceptional marine biodiversity, particularly as a sanctuary for massive schools of hammerhead and silky sharks, sometimes numbering in the hundreds. Due to its extreme isolation, the island hosts unique endemic terrestrial species, such as the Malpelo lizard and land crabs. There is no permanent civilian population on the island, with only a small military detachment present since 1986 to ensure environmental protection and national sovereignty.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access to the island is strictly regulated and only physically possible via authorized liveaboard dive boats departing from the Colombian mainland. The arduous boat journey across the open Pacific Ocean typically takes well over thirty continuous hours.
📅
Best season
Professional diving expeditions are organized year-round, but specific majestic marine life sightings vary significantly by season. The cooler months often bring massive schools of hammerhead sharks, while warmer months might offer whale shark sightings.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The small island itself is a barren, incredibly sheer rock jutting aggressively out of the ocean, offering absolutely no sandy beaches or easy landing spots. All recreational activity takes place deep underwater along dramatic, steep vertical rocky walls.
🎒
What to bring
Specialized professional scuba diving gear suitable for highly advanced dives, including a reliable dive computer, surface marker buoy, and appropriate thermal protection, is mandatory. You will also need strong seasickness medication for the long crossing.
🅿️
Parking
There are quite obviously absolutely no vehicle parking facilities anywhere near the island. Travelers must securely park their vehicles or arrange suitable long-term mainland storage before finally boarding their designated liveaboard expedition vessel.
⚠️
Safety
Diving in this area is generally extremely challenging strictly due to strong, totally unpredictable ocean currents and the remote open-water location. It is strictly reserved for highly experienced divers who can easily handle demanding oceanic conditions.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical extensive liveaboard trip effectively covering travel time and multiple intensive diving days generally lasts between a full week and ten days. Visitors absolutely cannot stay overnight on the island itself under any given circumstances.
