Sogamoso, famously known as the 'City of the Sun,' is a prominent religious and industrial hub in the Boyacá Department. In the pre-Columbian era, it served as the sacred center of the Muisca people and the seat of the high priest Sugamuxi, where the magnificent Sun Temple was built. Although the temple was destroyed during the Spanish conquest, it has since been reconstructed and stands as the centerpiece of the local Archaeological Museum. The city's modern growth was heavily influenced by the 1948 establishment of the Acerías Paz del Río steel mill, which turned Sogamoso into a regional economic powerhouse. Located on the Altiplano Cundiboyacense plateau, the city is a strategic transportation node connecting central Colombia with the Eastern Plains (Llanos Orientales). Besides heavy industry, the region is noted for coal mining and agriculture. Sogamoso successfully blends its ancient indigenous history with a dynamic industrial present, remaining a vital cultural anchor for Muisca heritage.
