The Ituango Hydroelectric Power Plant (Hidroituango) is the most ambitious and simultaneously most controversial energy project in Colombian history. Located on the Cauca River in northern Antioquia Department, it is designed to supply nearly 20% of the country's electricity needs upon completion. The massive dam stands 225 meters high and creates a reservoir nearly 80 kilometers long. In 2018, the project faced a severe technical crisis leading to massive flooding and the evacuation of thousands of residents. Despite these setbacks, power generation successfully commenced in late 2022. The project is critical for national energy security but remains a focal point for debates regarding environmental impact and social compensation. It represents the engineering challenges of building major infrastructure within the rugged Andean terrain.

The Ituango Hydroelectric Dam in Colombia is the country's largest hydroelectric project, covering a significant part of the national electricity demand. It plays a central role in Colombia's energy supply.
Visiting
The dam is typically not accessible to the public for security reasons. There are official viewpoints along the access road from which the structure and reservoir are visible.
Where to view it
The best public viewpoint is a platform near the tunnel portal entrance, offering a direct view of the dam wall. From the bridge over the Cauca River downstream, one gets an impressive view of the water masses.

The main product is electrical energy, fed into the Colombian national grid. In surrounding villages, local specialties such as coffee, cocoa, and fruits are offered.

The power plant operates year-round, with electricity production fluctuating seasonally depending on water availability. Highest output is achieved during the rainy season from April to November.
