Mogao Caves (China)

Weather…

The Mogao Caves, also known as the 'Caves of the Thousand Buddhas,' are located near the oasis town of Dunhuang in Gansu Province, at a vital crossroads of the ancient Silk Road. The complex consists of 492 surviving temples hewn into the sandstone cliffs of the Mingsha Mountains over a period of 1,000 years, from the 4th to the 14th century. They house an extraordinary collection of Buddhist art, including approximately 45,000 square meters of intricate murals and over 2,000 polychrome sculptures. In 1900, the famous 'Library Cave' was discovered, containing tens of thousands of manuscripts, documents, and silk paintings in various languages, providing unparalleled insights into the history of Central Asia. These treasures reflect the intense religious and cultural exchanges between China, India, and the West that occurred along the Silk Road. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987, the caves remain one of the world's most significant Buddhist shrines and a testament to a millennium of artistic achievement and spiritual devotion.
