Robinson Crusoe Island, part of the Juan Fernández Archipelago, is an isolated volcanic peak in the Pacific Ocean. The location owes its historical fame to Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk, who lived here entirely alone for four years in the early 18th century, inspiring Daniel Defoe's classic novel. The population of just a few hundred people lives entirely in the tiny village of San Juan Bautista. The island's main attraction is its unique biodiversity; the vast majority of its landmass is a protected biosphere reserve. The landscape, characterized by dense fern forests and steep basalt cliffs, is home to a wealth of endemic plants and bird species. Visitors can hike the steep trail up to the Mirador de Selkirk viewpoint or explore the rich marine life through scuba diving, often encountering playful Juan Fernández fur seals. Located approximately 670 kilometers from the mainland, the island is accessible via small aircraft departing from Santiago, though flights are highly weather-dependent. The pinnacle of local gastronomy is the endemic rock lobster (langosta de Juan Fernández), prepared fresh in the village's small eateries. The best window for travel is between November and March, when the sea is calmer and flight conditions are more reliable.
