Maipo Valley (Chile)

Weather…

The Maipo Valley is located in the heart of Chile's central region, immediately south of the capital Santiago, and is considered the country's most traditional wine-growing area. Geographically, the valley is shaped by the Maipo River and the foothills of the Andes, with altitudes varying between 400 and 800 meters above sea level. The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate characterized by dry summers and cool nights, creating good conditions for growing red grape varieties, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon. Historically, large-scale viticulture began here in the mid-19th century with the import of French vines by wealthy landowners. Today, the valley is divided into three sub-regions: Alto Maipo, Central Maipo, and Maipo Bajo, each featuring different soil compositions ranging from alluvial to stony substrates. Economically, the valley is significant not only for the export of high-quality wines but also as a center for agrotourism due to its proximity to the Santiago metropolitan area.
