Cousiño Palace (Chile)

Weather…

The Cousiño Palace in Santiago is a magnificent example of late 19th-century architecture in Chile. It was built between 1870 and 1878 for Isidora Goyenechea, the widow of mining magnate Luis Cousiño, designed by French architect Paul Lathoud. The estate reflects the enormous wealth the Cousiño family acquired through coal mining and viticulture. The palace was the first residence in South America to feature an electric elevator and central heating, which was a technological sensation at the time. The interior decoration is characterized by European luxury, with Italian marble, French silk wallpapers, and Empire-style furniture. Today, the palace serves as a museum and a venue for official receptions by the Santiago municipality. It was declared a National Monument in 1981 and provides visitors a fascinating look into the golden era of the Chilean aristocracy.
