Elqui Valley (Chile)

Weather…

The Elqui Valley extends in the Coquimbo region at the southern edge of the Atacama Desert and is known for its extreme aridity and clear night skies. Geographically, the valley stretches from the coast deep into the Andes, where vineyard altitudes can rise to over 2,000 meters. This location allows for intense solar radiation combined with cool night temperatures, favoring characterful wines and the production of Pisco, the Chilean grape spirit. Historically, the valley is closely linked to the poet Gabriela Mistral, who grew up in Montegrande and received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1945. Agriculture is made possible by a complex system of irrigation canals that direct meltwater from the Andes into the dry region. Due to low light pollution, the valley also hosts several significant astronomical observatories, including the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory. The combination of agriculture, literary history, and astronomy makes the valley a cultural and scientific center in northern Chile.
