Prime Minister's Lodge
The Prime Minister's Lodge in Buea, often referred to as "Schloss Buea," is a magnificent example of German colonial architecture located at the foot of Mount Cameroon. The building was constructed between 1901 and 1902 on the orders of German Governor Jesko von Puttkamer, who made Buea the capital of Cameroon due to its cooler climate. The neoclassical style residence was intended to demonstrate Germany's imperial power in Africa and was built using materials largely brought from Europe. After World War I, the building served British colonial administrators and, after independence, became the residence of the Prime Minister of West Cameroon. The castle is surrounded by extensive gardens housing a variety of exotic plants that von Puttkamer personally imported. Despite political changes, the building has remained a symbol of state authority and is still used today for official receptions and as a government residence. Its location at an altitude of about 1,000 meters gives a strategic view over the region and the distant ocean. The architecture with its wide verandas and high ceilings is perfectly adapted to the local mountain climate. It is considered one of the best-preserved historical buildings in the country.
