Bangangté is the capital of Ndé Department in the West Region and sits at about 1 400 metres elevation in the heart of the Bamiléké highlands, some 75 kilometres south-east of Bafoussam. Its roughly 70 000 inhabitants belong to the Bangangté kingdom, one of the oldest and most influential Bamiléké chieftaincies, and the town hosts the renowned private Université des Montagnes, one of Central Africa's first private medical universities. The economy is dominated by coffee, maize, beans, sweet potatoes and retail trade, while construction, education and healthcare are growing fast. Notable sites include the Royal Chieftaincy of Bangangté with its striking carved pillars, the Pa'a Ngangté cultural museum and the nearby Mami Mami waterfall. The mild mountain climate with two rainy seasons and moderate dry periods supports fertile farmland and creates a particularly liveable atmosphere for a growing population.
