Stung Treng is located in the remote northeastern part of Cambodia, at the confluence of the Mekong and Sekong Rivers, approximately 50 kilometers south of the Laotian border. The city serves as a vital transportation hub for trade between Cambodia and Laos and is a key location within the Mekong River basin's Ramsar-designated wetlands. These wetlands are ecologically significant due to their unique flooded forests and biodiversity, providing a habitat for numerous migratory bird species and rare fish. One of the region's natural highlights is the Sopheakmit Waterfall, a massive series of rapids where the Mekong falls over rocky ledges on the border with Laos. Historically, Stung Treng has a diverse cultural heritage, with significant populations of Lao and various ethnic minority groups who have influenced the local customs and language. The town is also known for its traditional silk weaving and the production of a unique variety of fermented fish known as 'pa-ok', which is a regional specialty.
