Getting there
The remote coastal region is often difficult to reach by land, which is why boat trips from nearby settlements or river ports are common. Roads in the hinterland can be unpaved and in poor condition depending on the weather.
Best season
The drier season from November to April is best suited for visiting the mangroves and beaches. During the Asian monsoon, heavy rain, rough seas, and very difficult transport conditions are to be expected.
Terrain & paths
The coast is dominated by dense mangrove forests, hidden sandy beaches, and estuaries. Exploration is mostly done by water; small paths on land can be very soft, muddy, or influenced by tides.
What to bring
Effective insect protection is indispensable in the mangroves. Also pack sun protection, swimwear, waterproof bags for your valuables, and light but protective clothing for boat tours.
Parking
Those arriving with their own vehicle usually leave it safely at the starting points or larger towns in Koh Kong province before transferring to boats or local transport for the onward journey.
Safety
Always plan trips into the mangroves with a local boat guide to avoid getting lost in the water maze. Pay attention to the tides and swim only on beaches that are known to be safe.
