Kampong Cham serves as the administrative capital of the province bearing the same name and is strategically positioned on the right bank of the Mekong River. The city is historically significant as a major trade hub during the French colonial period, evidenced by the remaining architectural structures and the expansive Chup rubber plantations located nearby. In 2001, the Kizuna Bridge was inaugurated as the first bridge to span the Mekong River in Cambodia, significantly improving regional connectivity and economic growth. Visitors and scholars often study the Nokor Bachey Temple, an 11th-century Mahayana Buddhist shrine built during the reign of Jayavarman VII on the site of an older sanctuary. The surrounding landscape is characterized by fertile red soil, which supports intensive agriculture and the large-scale production of tobacco, soy, and various tropical fruits. Modern developments continue to transform the urban area while preserving its role as a vital educational and commercial center for eastern Cambodia's rural hinterland.
