Pernik Fortress, also known as Krakra Fortress, is situated on a high rocky plateau overlooking the Struma River. It was one of the most vital defensive strongholds of the First Bulgarian Empire during the 10th and 11th centuries. The fortress is named after the legendary Bulgarian boyar Krakra, who successfully defended it against the repeated attacks of Byzantine Emperor Basil II. Krakra famously withstood major sieges in 1004 and 1016, cementing his place as a hero in Bulgarian history. Archaeological excavations have uncovered double defensive walls, towers, and the remains of seven medieval churches, along with a palace complex. Its strategic location allowed for the control of trade routes connecting the central Balkans with the Adriatic coast. Today, the site functions as an archaeological reserve with restored wall sections and modern visitor facilities. It features sweeping panoramic views of the city of Pernik and the surrounding mountain ranges.
