Nessebar Ruins (Bulgaria)

Weather…

Nessebar is one of the oldest cities in Europe, situated on a rocky peninsula on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Founded over 3,000 years ago by the Thracians under the name Mesembria, it later developed into a significant Greek polis and a Roman regional center. The ruins of Nessebar bear witness to a turbulent history, featuring Thracian fortifications, Hellenistic city walls, and Roman infrastructure. The city is particularly famous for its numerous medieval churches from the Byzantine and Bulgarian eras, such as the monumental Church of Saint Sophia (the Old Bishopric) dating back to the 5th century. The town's architecture is defined by narrow cobblestone streets and characteristic residential houses from the Bulgarian National Revival period. Due to its exceptional cultural heritage, the ancient town of Nessebar was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1983. Today, it serves as an open-air museum that attracts thousands of visitors annually, showcasing a unique blend of ancient and medieval history.
