Hercílio Luz Bridge (Brazil)

Weather…

The Hercílio Luz Bridge in Florianópolis is the oldest and longest suspension bridge in Brazil, connecting the mainland to Santa Catarina Island. Opened in 1926, the steel structure was a significant engineering milestone of its era and remains the most iconic symbol of the state of Santa Catarina. Following structural concerns, it was closed to traffic in 1982 and remained a silent monument for decades until a major restoration project allowed its reopening in December 2019. The bridge has a total length of 821 meters and is distinguished by its eyebar chain suspension system, which was innovative at the time of construction. It is named after Governor Hercílio Luz, who initiated the project but passed away just before its completion. Currently, it serves pedestrians, cyclists, and public transit, and its brilliant nighttime illumination makes it a highlight of the city's skyline. The bridge is protected as a national historic and artistic heritage site.
