Atlantic Forest
The Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) extends along the eastern coast of Brazil and is one of the most biodiverse yet most threatened ecosystems in the world. Originally covering approximately 1.3 million square kilometers, only about 12% to 15% of its original area remains today in a fragmented state. Despite this massive destruction, it hosts an extraordinary number of endemic species; about 40% of its vertebrates and over 50% of its plant species are found nowhere else on Earth. The vegetation ranges from coastal mangroves and restingas to montane cloud forests in the higher elevations of the Serra do Mar. Historically, the Mata Atlântica was the first area of Brazil to be heavily impacted by colonization, with the establishment of sugarcane and coffee plantations and later urbanization. Today, more than 70% of the Brazilian population lives within the forest's former range, increasing pressure on the remaining protected areas. International and national conservation organizations are working intensively on reforestation and the creation of ecological corridors to enable genetic exchange between isolated forest fragments.
