Orapa Diamond Mine (Botswana)

Weather…

The Orapa diamond mine is one of the world's largest open-pit diamond mines by area, located in the Central District of Botswana. Discovered in 1967 by De Beers geologists, the mine officially commenced operations in 1971. It exploits the AK1 kimberlite pipe, a massive volcanic structure that has produced hundreds of millions of carats over the decades. The facility is operated by Debswana, a joint venture between the government of Botswana and De Beers. The mining complex is so large that it supports its own purpose-built town, Orapa, which provides housing, healthcare, and education for thousands of employees and their families. As a cornerstone of the national economy, Orapa has been instrumental in transforming Botswana from one of the world's poorest nations at independence into a middle-income country, funding vital public services.
