Sarajevo Synagogue (Bosnia and Herzegovina)

Weather…

The Ashkenazi Synagogue of Sarajevo is an architectural masterpiece in the Neo-Moorish style and the only active synagogue remaining in the city today. It was inaugurated in 1902 on the left bank of the Miljacka River to accommodate the needs of the growing Ashkenazi Jewish community that settled in the region following the Austro-Hungarian occupation of Bosnia in 1878. The impressive building was designed by the renowned Czech architect Karel Pařík and is distinguished by its characteristic pink facade, large artistically crafted arched windows, and four prominent dome-crowned corner towers. Inside, the synagogue dazzles visitors with its elaborate stucco decorations, a richly painted ceiling, and panoramic chandeliers. Unlike many other Jewish sacred sites across Europe, the synagogue survived both World War II and the 1990s siege largely unscathed. Today, the building serves not only as a place of worship but also as a thriving cultural center that celebrates the history and heritage of Sarajevo's Jewish community.
