Livno is a historic city in western Bosnia and Herzegovina, situated at the edge of Livanjsko Polje, the largest karst field in the world. The city was first mentioned in historical documents in 892 in a charter by the Croatian Duke Mutimir. Livno is home to a rich heritage that spans from Illyrian tribes and Roman times to the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian periods. Prominent landmarks include the 16th-century Sahat-kula (clock tower) and the Duman source of the Bistrica River, which emerges directly from a cave system at the foot of Bašajkovac Mountain. A unique natural attraction of the region is the population of over 800 wild horses that have roamed free on the Krug plateau above the city for decades. Livno is also world-renowned for its traditional Livno cheese, with production methods dating back to the 19th century. The city serves as the administrative center of Canton 10, blending alpine mountain landscapes with Mediterranean influences.
