Lake Nokoué (Benin)

Weather…

Lake Nokoué is the largest inland body of water in Benin, situated directly north of the economic capital, Cotonou. Covering an area of approximately 160 square kilometers, this brackish lake is an ecologically sensitive system linked to the Atlantic Ocean via the Cotonou Lagoon and to the Porto-Novo Lagoon through various channels. The lake is world-famous for Ganvié, Africa's largest stilt village, where more than 30,000 people live in houses built on wooden piles directly over the water. The local economy relies heavily on the 'Acadja' system, a traditional form of aquaculture using tree branches to create fish enclosures. As a designated Ramsar site, the lake serves as a critical habitat for numerous migratory bird species and rare aquatic life. However, the lake's water quality faces challenges from urban expansion and sedimentation from the Ouémé and Sô rivers that feed it.

Best season
The dry months, typically between November and February, are good for visiting, offering more pleasant humidity levels and stable water conditions for boat tours around the lagoon.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The area is an expansive aquatic ecosystem characterized by shallow waters and stilt villages like Ganvié. Movement is almost entirely by boat, with very limited dry land walking involved around the shoreline.
🎒
What to bring
Bring a wide-brimmed hat, strong sunscreen, a waterproof bag for cameras, and plenty of drinking water. Cash in small denominations is highly recommended for paying local boatmen and vendors on the water.
