Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve is a city in the Belgian province of Walloon Brabant, composed of two distinct parts. Ottignies is the older, more traditional town, while Louvain-la-Neuve is a planned city, built from the 1970s to house the French-speaking side of the Catholic University of Louvain (UCLouvain). This makes it a fascinating study in urban planning, with a center that is entirely pedestrianized. The city is defined by its student population, creating a spirited, dynamic atmosphere. The Musée Hergé, dedicated to the creator of Tintin, is a major cultural highlight. The architecture of Louvain-la-Neuve is modern and functional, centered around a large central square, Place de l'Université. The city features a large shopping center, a theater, a cinema, and numerous bars and restaurants catering to its youthful residents. For a break from the urban environment, the Bois de Lauzelle provides a large forested area for walking and recreation. Gastronomy is diverse and international, but you can still find Belgian classics like fries (frites) and a wide selection of local beers. Located about 30 km southeast of Brussels, the city is extremely well-connected by train, with direct lines to Brussels, Namur, and Luxembourg. This makes it an easy day trip or a convenient base for exploring the region. The academic year (September-June) is the liveliest time to visit.
