Courcelles is situated in the Hainaut province, just north of Charleroi, and possesses a history deeply intertwined with the coal mining industry of the Sambre-Meuse axis. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the town flourished as an industrial powerhouse, attracting a large workforce to its mines and ironworks. A significant cultural landmark within the municipality is the Castle of Trazegnies, a historic fortress and residence that has stood since the 11th century and served as the seat of the powerful Trazegnies family. The town's history is also marked by the 'Courcelles Massacre' of August 1944, a tragic event where collaborationist forces executed 27 civilians as retaliation for resistance activities. In the modern era, Courcelles has transitioned from its heavy industrial roots toward a service-oriented economy, with many former mining sites repurposed into green spaces and parks. Its proximity to the A54 and E42 motorways makes it a strategic residential and logistical hub for the Greater Charleroi region.
