South Point Lighthouse (Barbados)

Weather…

South Point Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Barbados, standing proudly on the island's southernmost tip in Christ Church. Erected in 1852, this iconic red and white striped tower has a unique historical pedigree: it was originally manufactured in London and displayed as an engineering marvel at the 1851 Great Exhibition in Hyde Park's Crystal Palace before being shipped in segments to the Caribbean. Standing 89 feet tall, the structure is made of cast iron, a modern choice for the mid-19th century. Its primary function was to warn mariners of the treacherous reefs and powerful currents that surround the southern coast, which had claimed numerous ships in earlier years. While the lighthouse is now automated and not generally open for internal tours, its grounds remain a popular spot for visitors to appreciate Victorian industrial design. The site provides a commanding view of the Atlantic Ocean and the world-renowned surfing waves at nearby Silver Sands, making it a key landmark for both navigation and heritage tourism.
