Main Guard Building
The Main Guard Building is an architectural highlight within the historic St. Ann's Garrison, a site recognized as part of Barbados's UNESCO World Heritage. Completed in 1804, this elegant structure served as the central guard house for the British military forces on the island. Its most distinctive features include a graceful clock tower and a handsome red-brick veranda with white arches, epitomizing the Georgian military style prevalent in the Caribbean during the early 19th century. The building's pediment is adorned with the coat of arms of King George III, highlighting its colonial significance. Today, the Main Guard is best known for hosting the ceremonial Changing of the Guard, a lively display of military tradition featuring soldiers in historic Zouave uniforms accompanied by a brass band. Situated overlooking the Garrison Savannah, the building remains a proud symbol of the nation's military heritage and serves as a cultural hub for history enthusiasts, often housing exhibitions and community events.
