Originally laid out in the 19th century and known for over a hundred years as Trafalgar Square, it was officially renamed in 1999 to honor the island's national heroes and move away from its colonial-centric naming. Notably, the Barbadian version of the square actually predates the more famous Trafalgar Square in London. The square is surrounded by grand architectural landmarks, most notably the historic Parliament Buildings and the Cenotaph, a war memorial dedicated to the Barbadians who served and died in the World Wars. For over two centuries, a prominent bronze statue of Lord Nelson stood here, but its removal in 2020 signaled a major shift in the nation's historical narrative and its path toward becoming a republic.
