Gun Hill Signal Station (Barbados)

Weather…

Perched on a ridge in the parish of Saint George, the Gun Hill Signal Station is one of the most significant historic sites in Barbados. Established in 1818, it served as a vital link in a chain of signal stations used by the British military to relay messages across the island using flags and lanterns, primarily to warn of maritime threats or civil unrest. Its strategic elevation provides some of the finest panoramic views of Barbados, stretching across the southern plains to the Caribbean Sea. The station's most famous feature is the large white lion statue, intricately carved from a single block of limestone in 1868 by Captain Henry Jakob. Following a major restoration by the Barbados National Trust in 1982, the site now functions as a museum and scenic lookout. Visitors can explore the well-preserved military architecture, antique cannons, and lush landscaped gardens, all while gaining insight into the 19th-century colonial defense system and enjoying the tranquil atmosphere of the hillside.
