Kushtia is widely celebrated as the cultural capital of Bangladesh, deeply rooted in the traditions of music and literature. It is most famous for being the home of the 19th-century mystic singer and philosopher Lalon Shah, whose shrine in Cheouria attracts thousands of followers and admirers every year. The city is also closely associated with the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, who spent significant time at his ancestral estate, the Shilaidaha Kuthibari, where he composed many of his masterpieces. Geographically, Kushtia is situated on the banks of the Gorai River, a distributary of the Ganges, which has historically influenced its economy and landscape. The city was also a pioneer in the industrial sector of East Bengal, housing the historic Mohini Mill, once the largest cotton mill in the region. Today, it remains a center for education and arts, preserving the rich folk heritage of the Baul tradition.
