Primeval Forest National Park (Bahamas)

Weather…

Primeval Forest National Park on New Providence is a 7.5-acre (3-hectare) protected area preserving one of the last remaining examples of untouched Caribbean hardwood forest. Established in 2002 and managed by the Bahamas National Trust, the park is characterized by its dramatic topography featuring deep limestone sinkholes that reach depths of up to 50 feet (15 meters). These cavernous systems were formed over millennia by the chemical dissolution of limestone by acidic rainwater. The forest canopy is composed of ancient mahogany trees, cedars, and wild tamarinds, which flourish in the moist microclimate provided by the sinkholes. The park provides a rare glimpse into the island's original ecosystem prior to European settlement and the subsequent deforestation for plantations. A system of boardwalks and stairs allows visitors to safely navigate the deep crevices and dense flora. Beyond its botanical significance, the forest provides a vital sanctuary for native bird species and reptiles within the heavily urbanized environment of Nassau.
