Mariazell Basilica (Austria)

Weather…

The Mariazell Basilica in Styria is Austria's most significant pilgrimage site and one of the most important religious destinations in Central Europe. Its foundation dates back to 1157, when the monk Magnus erected a wooden chapel for a statue of Mary, now revered as the 'Magna Mater Austriae'. The architectural uniqueness of the basilica lies in the combination of a Gothic central tower with two Baroque side towers, the result of an extensive expansion by Domenico Sciassia in the 17th century. Inside, the Gnadenkapelle (Chapel of Grace) houses the late Romanesque miraculous image, the destination for millions of the faithful. The church was elevated to a basilica minor in 1907 by Pope Pius X and serves as a symbol of the deeply rooted Catholic tradition within the Habsburg multi-ethnic state. Beyond its religious significance, the basilica is an outstanding example of the fusion of various European artistic styles over several centuries.
