Forchtenstein Castle (Austria)

Weather…

Forchtenstein Castle, majestically situated on a rocky spur of the Rosalia Mountains in Burgenland, is one of Austria's most impressive fortresses. Built in the 14th century, it came into the possession of the Esterházy family in 1622, who expanded it into a powerful Baroque castle and a repository for their family treasures. Notable features include the Baroque ancestors' gallery and the treasury, which is considered the only art chamber in Central Europe preserved at its original location. The massive walls successfully withstood Ottoman sieges and served as a secure depot for valuable weapons, art objects, and curiosities. Visitors can explore the historical armory today, which houses one of Europe's largest private weapon collections. The 142-meter-deep castle well, dug by prisoners in the 16th century, is another testament to the architectural achievement and the harsh conditions of that time.
