Devonport is a pretty port city on the northern coast of Tasmania, situated at the mouth of the Mersey River. The town is best known as the main port for the famous Spirit of Tasmania ferries, making it the gateway to the island for many travelers arriving from Melbourne. However, the city is much more than a simple transit stop: it awaits visitors with a rich maritime history, excellent parks, and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Beach lovers can choose from several excellent beaches in the area. The popular Bluff Beach and the family-friendly Coles Beach are first-rate spots for summer swimming and picnics. For those seeking wilder, more natural shores, East Devonport Beach, Back Beach, or Pardoe Beach offer great opportunities for long coastal walks and observing marine life. The coastal walking and cycling tracks (such as along the Don River Railway) provide wonderful views across the Bass Strait. In addition to natural beauties, the city's cultural life is also notable. The Bass Strait Maritime Centre showcases the region's seafaring past, while the nearby fertile agricultural lands ensure that local gastronomy is built on fresh, quality ingredients. In the cafes and restaurants, you can taste Tasmania's finest cheeses, seafood, and wines. Devonport is easily accessible by ferry, by plane from the local airport, or by car from Launceston and Hobart.
