💡 Tips

  • The desert climate means very cold winter nights and extremely hot summer days; always pack layers.
  • Renting a 4WD is highly recommended if you plan to properly explore the surrounding MacDonnell Ranges.
  • Avoid driving outside the town limits at dawn or dusk due to the high risk of kangaroos on the roads.
  • Start your outdoor activities early in the morning to beat the intense midday heat.
  • Keep a fly net handy during the warmer months, as the outback flies can be quite persistent.

Alice Springs Desert Park

Wander the peaceful pathways to experience the diverse desert landscapes, flora, and fauna up close.

Alice Springs lies in the heart of Australia's famous Red Centre and is one of the country's most renowned desert towns. Although it has no coastline, the charm of the Outback, the red sand dunes, and the arid yet remarkable desert landscape more than compensate visitors. Historically developed around a telegraph station, it is today the second most populous settlement in the vast Northern Territory, truly an oasis in the middle of the desert. The town is primarily known as an excellent starting point for exploring Australia's most iconic natural wonders. While Uluru (Ayers Rock) is several hundred kilometers away, many launch their desert expeditions from here. Much closer are the magnificent MacDonnell Ranges, whose gorges, hiking trails, and hidden, cooling rock pools (such as Ellery Creek Big Hole or Simpsons Gap) offer a unique experience. The desert flora and fauna are most comprehensively showcased at the Alice Springs Desert Park. The settlement has a rich Aboriginal cultural heritage based on the traditions of the Arrernte people. Local galleries and cultural centers display world-class Aboriginal artworks. It can be reached by domestic flights (the town has its own airport) or by the iconic The Ghan luxury train, which stops here while traveling between Adelaide and Darwin, offering an unparalleled travel experience.
