Puerto Deseado
Puerto Deseado, located in the Santa Cruz province, is renowned for the Ría Deseado, a rare geological formation where the sea floods a submerged river canyon. This creates a unique ecosystem teeming with marine wildlife, including Commerson's dolphins, Magellanic penguins, and cormorants. A major attraction is the Isla Pingüino, one of the few places in Patagonia where visitors can see the striking Rockhopper penguins. The town also is home to a rich maritime history, with the Mario Brozoski Municipal Museum housing artifacts from the HMS Swift, a British sloop that sank in 1770. Accessible via National Route 281, it is an essential stop for nature lovers. The convenient visiting period is from October to April when the wildlife is most active and accessible via organized boat tours.
