The Valdés Peninsula in Chubut province is a natural sanctuary of global importance, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. This Patagonian coastal region is renowned for its exceptional concentration of marine fauna. Between June and December, it becomes the most important breeding and mating ground for the southern right whale. The peninsula's beaches also host huge colonies of Magellanic penguins, sea lions, and elephant seals. In the waters around the peninsula, orcas can be observed using a unique hunting technique, intentionally beaching themselves to catch young sea lions, a behavior not documented in this form anywhere else in the world. The dry steppe landscape of the interior is home to guanacos, rheas, and maras, completing the picture of one of the most complete marine ecosystems on the planet.

From June to December, southern right whales are visible in the peninsula's bays to calve. Between September and March, elephant seals and penguins arrive on the beaches.

Whale watching is best early morning when the sea is calm and visibility is good. In the afternoon, elephant seals are often active on land, especially during mating season.

Etiquette

Keep a distance of at least 100 meters when whale watching, as required by regulations. On land, do not approach elephant seals and penguins closer than 50 meters.

High-magnification binoculars and a waterproof camera are convenient for coastal viewing. Warm clothing and a rain jacket are essential due to the windy climate.

Valdés Peninsula is accessible via Ruta Nacional 3 and a turnoff near Puerto Madryn. Within the protected area, well-maintained roads lead to main attractions.
