El Shincal de Quimivil (Argentina)

Weather…

Shincal de Quimivil, located in Catamarca province, was the most significant Inca administrative and ceremonial center in present-day Argentina. Inhabited between 1470 and 1536, the city was strategically positioned along the Qhapaq Ñan, the great Inca road system, serving as a provincial capital for the southern empire. The ruins comprise more than 100 stone structures, including kallankas (large communal halls), qollqas (storage facilities), and a monumental ushnu, a pyramid-shaped ceremonial platform located at the center of the main plaza. The layout of the buildings mirrors the architecture of Cuzco, highlighting the site's importance for imperial control. Surrounded by two artificially flattened hills that functioned as watchtowers, Shincal provided both security and an impressive backdrop for state rituals. Today, it is one of the nation's most important archaeological sites and a primary symbol of the far-reaching influence of the Inca Empire.
