Iron Palace (Angola)

Weather…

The Iron Palace (Palácio de Ferro) in Luanda is a striking example of late 19th-century prefabricated iron architecture. Although definitive records are missing, the design is widely attributed to Gustave Eiffel's workshop due to its structural similarities to his other works. The iron structure was originally manufactured in France and was intended for a Paris exhibition or for use in Madagascar. By a twist of fate, it ended up in Angola after the ship carrying it was diverted by ocean currents and offloaded the materials in Luanda. During the colonial period, it served various administrative functions but fell into disrepair following national independence. After a comprehensive restoration in 2009, it was reopened as a cultural center and stands today as one of the most significant architectural landmarks in the Angolan capital, showcasing intricate metalwork and characteristic industrial-era aesthetics.
