In the high-altitude farmlands of Canillo, the traditional agricultural landscape provides a good habitat for the common weasel (Mustela nivalis). As the world's smallest carnivore, this animal is perfectly adapted to living among the dry stone walls and old barns of Andorran farms. Its extremely slender body allows it to pursue rodents into their narrowest burrows, making it a highly effective hunter. In the fields surrounding Canillo, weasels play a crucial ecological role by naturally controlling populations of field mice and voles. Due to a very high metabolic rate, they must hunt almost constantly and are often seen darting between rocks and tufts of grass even during daylight hours. For nature enthusiasts exploring Andorra, spotting this brave little predator is a highlight; despite its tiny size, the weasel is known for its remarkable courage and tenacity in the Pyrenean wilderness.
