El Menia, formerly known by its French name El Goléa, is a scenic oasis city in central Algeria and the capital of the El Menia province, created in 2019. The city is often called the 'Pearl of the Sahara' because it has lush vegetation and extensive palm groves in the middle of the arid desert. A prominent landmark is the old Ksar, a fortified structure on a hill providing a wide view over the oasis and the surrounding sand dunes of the Great Eastern Erg. El Menia is also a significant religious site; it houses the grave of the French priest and hermit Charles de Foucauld, who was interred in the Church of St. Joseph. The local economy profits from agriculture, specifically the cultivation of dates, citrus fruits, and grains, made possible by the region's abundant groundwater. Thanks to its location on the North-South highway, the city is a vital stopping point for travelers traversing the Algerian hinterland.
