In Salah is a significant oasis city in the heart of the Algerian Sahara and belongs to the In Salah province, which was split from Tamanrasset province in 2019. The city was historically a central hub for caravan trade, linking the Mediterranean coast with Sub-Saharan Africa, transporting goods such as gold, ivory, and salt. Architecturally, In Salah is known for its characteristic red clay buildings in the Neo-Sudanese style, which provide protection against extreme heat. A geographical peculiarity is the threat of moving sand dunes, which regularly threaten to bury parts of the city. In modern times, the settlement has developed into an economic center for natural gas extraction, as one of Algeria's largest gas fields is located nearby. In 2015, the city made international headlines due to local protests against planned shale gas drilling in the region.
