Ouled Djellal is a strategically important city on the edge of the Sahara in northern Algeria and has been the capital of the province of the same name since 2019. The city is famous nationwide for the 'Ouled Djellal' sheep breed, considered Algeria's most significant source of meat and wool and the backbone of the local economy. Geographically, it is located in a transition zone between the Hodna steppes and the actual desert, allowing for diverse agricultural use. Besides livestock farming, the region is a major producer of high-quality 'Deglet Nour' dates, exported worldwide. Historically, Ouled Djellal was an important trading post for nomadic tribes who exchanged their products for grain from the north. The city possesses a growing infrastructure, including educational institutions and modern irrigation projects aimed at combating desertification. The architecture combines traditional mud-brick construction in older quarters with functional new buildings befitting a provincial capital.
