Timimoun, often called the 'Red Oasis', is the cultural center of the Gourara region in southwestern Algeria. The city is world-famous for its unique Sudanese-Sahelian architecture made of red clay, giving the buildings their characteristic appearance. A technological marvel of the region is the foggara system, a centuries-old method for underground water distribution that ensures the survival of oases in the arid desert. Timimoun is located at the edge of a massive sebkha, a dried-up salt lake that is now a fascinating geological formation. The city is also a center of spiritual life, known for the 'Ahellil' chants of the Zenata Berbers, recognized by UNESCO as a masterpiece of oral heritage. During the French colonial period, the 'Oasis Rouge' hotel was a symbol of colonial presence and still serves as an architectural monument today. Today, Timimoun attracts visitors with its authentic atmosphere, colorful markets, and its location among the dunes of the Great Western Erg.
