Tindouf is a strategically vital city in the extreme southwest of Algeria, located near the borders with Morocco, Mauritania, and Western Sahara. Founded in the mid-19th century by the Tadjakant tribe, it rapidly evolved into a crucial resting point for caravans traversing the Trans-Saharan trade routes. The city is situated in an extremely arid desert region known as the Hamada, which profoundly shapes the lives of its inhabitants. Internationally, Tindouf is primarily recognized as the location of refugee camps for the Sahrawi people, who have sought shelter here since the 1970s. Economically, the region is gaining increasing importance due to the development of the massive iron ore deposits at Gara Djebilet, leading to large-scale infrastructure projects such as the construction of a new railway line. Despite the harsh climatic conditions, Tindouf possesses a modern airport and serves as a major logistical base for the Algerian military. The city stands as a symbol of regional stability and plays a central role in the geopolitics of the Maghreb.
