Mansourah Fortress (Algeria)

Weather…

The Mansourah Fortress, located on the western outskirts of Tlemcen, is a monumental ruin site that bears witness to the military and religious ambitions of the Marinid dynasty. It was constructed between 1299 and 1303 by Sultan Abu Yaqub Yusuf during his protracted siege of Tlemcen. The site was originally intended to be a complete city, featuring palaces, administrative centers, and a magnificent mosque to house the Marinid court and army. The most striking remnant of the complex is the 38-meter-high minaret of the mosque, which remains largely intact and is celebrated for its intricate stonework and decorative arches. The massive defensive walls once enclosed an area of over 100 hectares, though today only fragments and bastions remain visible. Following the withdrawal of the Marinids, the city was abandoned and fell into decay, with much of its stone repurposed for other buildings. Today, Mansourah is a protected national archaeological site and a symbol of the dynastic power struggles and architectural grandeur of the medieval Maghreb region.
