Kruja Castle (Albania)

Weather…

Kruja Castle is a site of immense national significance in Albania, serving as the epicenter of the 15th-century resistance against the Ottoman Empire led by the national hero, Skanderbeg. Perched on a precipitous cliff at 607 meters above sea level, the fortress successfully repelled three major Ottoman sieges in 1450, 1466, and 1467, only falling after Skanderbeg's death. The castle grounds house the Skanderbeg National Museum, an impressive building designed to honor his legacy with historical artifacts and artistic depictions of his battles. Additionally, the National Ethnographic Museum is located here within an authentic 1764 Toptani family residence, showcasing the region's rich artisanal traditions. The site also includes the remains of a medieval hammam and a Bektashi shrine, highlighting the cultural layers of the fortress. Below the entrance lies the Old Bazaar, one of Albania's oldest markets, where artisans continue to produce traditional felt crafts and wood carvings. On clear days, the castle walls provide memorable views extending to the Adriatic Sea and Tirana.
