Gjirokastra Castle (Albania)

Weather…

Gjirokastra Castle is one of the largest and most prominent fortresses in the Balkan region, dominating the skyline of the UNESCO-protected 'Stone City' in southern Albania. While the site has been fortified since the 12th century, its current monumental appearance is largely due to the massive expansion ordered by Ali Pasha of Tepelena in 1812, which included a clock tower and reinforced bastions. The fortress has served multiple roles over centuries, acting as a citadel, a residence, and a high-security prison during the 20th century. Today, it houses a comprehensive weapons museum showcasing artifacts from pre-modern times to World War II, as well as a captured US Air Force reconnaissance plane from 1957. The castle also serves as the prestigious venue for the Gjirokastra National Folklore Festival, held every five years on its grand open-air stage. Its high stone terraces offer sweeping vistas of the Drino Valley and the unique silver-colored slate roofs of the historic quarters below.
