Elbasan Castle (Albania)

Weather…

Elbasan Castle is a rare example of a lowland fortress in Albania, forming the historical heart of the city of Elbasan. It was constructed in 1466 by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II on the ruins of the Roman castrum of Scampis to serve as a military base during the campaigns against Skanderbeg. The fortress follows a nearly square plan, measuring roughly 300 meters on each side, and originally featured 26 defensive towers. The interior remains a bustling residential district, home to significant religious landmarks like the 15th-century King's Mosque and the 17th-century St. Mary's Church. The complex also features a 19th-century clock tower and a traditional Turkish bath, reflecting various periods of Ottoman influence. Its location on the ancient Via Egnatia made it a vital stopping point for trade caravans traveling between the Adriatic coast and Constantinople. While parts of the fortifications were dismantled in the 19th century, the southern walls remain remarkably well-preserved, showcasing authentic medieval masonry.
