Takht-e Rustam (Afghanistan)

Weather…

Takht-e Rustam, meaning 'Throne of Rustam,' is one of the most fascinating pre-Islamic archaeological sites in Afghanistan, located near Aybak in Samangan province. It is a unique Buddhist monastery complex carved entirely out of rock. Unlike other stupas, which were erected as buildings, the stupa of Takht-e Rustam is monolithic, it was carved out of the parent rock. The complex, dating from the 4th and 5th centuries, consists of the stupa itself, which lies in a deep trench, and an adjacent cave monastery with five chambers and a ceiling decorated with lotus leaf motifs. The name comes from Persian mythology and was given to the site by later generations who had forgotten its true Buddhist origin and associated it with the legendary hero Rustam. This extraordinary site demonstrates the influence of Buddhism in Afghanistan before the arrival of Islam and is a remarkable example of rock-cut architecture.
